The new campaign, called "Good To Know" by Google, is being initiated in order to educate Internet users about ways to keep themselves protected.
The information is free and very easily accessible on its own page, and has a vast array of topics that you can read about within the subject. The first topic that they cover is protecting yourself against phishing, which we all know is a pretty big deal these days. One of the tips they give is this: "Most importantly, never reply to suspicious emails, tweets, or posts with your personal or financial information. Also, don't fill out forms or sign-in screens that link from these messages." Now, most people reading this article are going to believe that this is just second nature, but you would be surprised how many people don't pay attention at all when they are surfing the web.
The campaign seems to be aimed at the average oblivious Internet user. In a blog post from the company, they describe the typical situation that these people get themselves into:
"Does this person sound familiar? He can't be bothered to type a password into his phone every time he wants to play a game of Angry Birds. When he does need a password, maybe for his email or bank Website, he chooses one that's easy to remember like his sister's name-and he uses the same one for each Website he visits. For him, cookies come from the bakery, IP addresses are the locations of Intellectual Property and a correct Google search result is basically magic."
While this may offend some people (like me), it will still be a helpful measure from the de facto owner of the Internet. Before you get all mush on them though, you should realize the fact that Google is probably, at least in part, trying to cover some of their criticisms with this. They have made many mistakes while trying to adjust to the idea of being so huge, and there was nothing they could really to to hide it. Regardless of how you feel, they do have some very useful tips and videos, so at least stop by and take a look.
