Recently, Microsoft acquired Sybari Software, an anti-virus tool designed for the business-level user.
By doing so, Microsoft caused other security companies to take notice, while having an effect on their competitors bottom-line.
According to TechWeb.com, since the announcement, other security companies, like Symantec and McAfee, have taken proverbial beatings in the stock markets.
"Microsoft's entry into this market will challenge anti-virus vendors such as Symantec, McAfee, and Trend Micro, which derive substantial revenue from upselling enterprises to anti-virus product suites that include desktops and servers," said a trio of Gartner analysts Wednesday in a briefing posted to the research firm's Web site.
Judging by Wall Street's reaction, investors agree.
Since the closing bell rang on Monday, Symatec's stock has fallen 10.6%. Trend Micro and McAfee each reported similar situations.
However, Symantec was defiant about Microsoft's purchase. A spokesperson for the company issued a response to TechWeb, which ended with…
"This acquisition does not provide Microsoft with the security and anti-virus response infrastructure necessary to support the virus protection needs of enterprise customers."
